HOL IRC FAQ
How can I register for HOL?
Student registration is closed for this year's term.
How do I get my student-ID?
You can look-up your HOL Student-ID here: http://www.hol.50g.com/faq/studentids.htm
How can I change my student name or email address?
Send an owl to the HOL Office, that includes your student-ID, old HOL name and new HOL name (old email address and new email address). Send the owl from the email address you've registered with. Changes are possible only until September 1st!
I feel lost. How do I start to learn my way around HOL?
All students are expected to read and know, in the following order:
Then, go to your House's main page to read about latest news in your House.
When do we get the passwords for the Common Rooms?
Your Common Room password will be "owled" to you at the start of term (Aug 30 / Sep 1). The Common Rooms open when HOL officially opens too -- kind of like how Hogwarts students don't get to go into their common room until the start of term.
Would we all start out as first years and work our way up?
Yes, exactly! All students - no matter what age - will start as "first years", as this will be the first year of HOL. The teachers are expected to consider your age, when it comes to your results. Other than that, your age is not important in HOL.
How can I win or lose House Points?
All students are expected to read, know and understand the House Points Rules. The vast majority of points will be awarded in coursework and exams. We expect every house to score at least 50,000 Points during the term, please get the relations right! The house that wins the HOL Quidditch Cup gains an additional 10,000 Points. You can lose points by misbehavior, by not complying to the HOL rules in general - please review the House Points Rules for details.
How can I become a prefect?
Prefects are chosen by the members of your house. Once you have been sorted into a house, you can start a "campaign" in your house common room, to let the other students know that you wanna be a prefect. The head of your house will then choose up to ten applicants, and all members of your house will then vote for their favorites. Every house will have more than one prefect, the exact number is up to the head of the houses, and depends of the size of that house.
What exactly are the privileges and duties of a prefect?
A Prefect is the main contact for all students who need help, have questions or problems. All students are supposed to contact one of their house's prefects first, before owling their Head of House or the Headmaster's Office. The prefect should contact the Professors or the Headmaster's Office only if he couldn't help or solve the problem on his own. Prefects are expected to be fair and stick to the HOL rules. They are expected to protect their house from losing points by encouraging their housemates to stick to the HOL rules. Their privileges include awarding and taking house points according to the House Points Rules.
How can I become a headboy or headgirl?
Headboy and Headgirl are chosen by the HOL Headmaster's Office out of all prefects, several weeks after the start of term!
How is Quidditch working at HOL?
Quidditch is currently under construction - no details yet, sorry! Each house will set up its Quidditch team in the Common Room, after the start of term.
Quidditch FAQ
How do we take classes and how many can we take?
You will be able to choose your class(es) after all students have been sorted into the HOL houses. You can name up to three classes - a first, a second and a third choice! Your wishes will be forwarded to the professors, who then set up their classes. They will try to confirm your first choice if possible! All professors will publish their class member list in their classrooms, then you can check if you made it to one, two or all three of your named classes. You will be able to join additional classes later on, if - and only if - there are still free slots! All classes have a student limit, so please don't expect to take all available classes.
How do classes work?
This depends on the professors teaching style. Usually you will get assignments from your professors... tasks, projects, doing papers, doing research, and so on. Some classes are run externally, some from within HOL. You'll get assignments, news and results either on the class blackboard in the classroom or with your classes mailing list. Coursework and results might be presented to all students. Some professors may hold live meetings or "professor's hours" in one of the HOL meeting rooms (chat rooms), but you won't have to enter a chat room to follow the classes. Please visit all the classrooms for details on coursework, schedules, etc. - before you sign up for the classes.
Do I have to buy books for the classes?
No! HOL won't cost you any money (other then your Internet cost). All books and reading material will be available online.
Will this interfere with my actual, real life school work?
No! If you don't apply for any of the prefect or Quidditch positions, you won't need more than one hour per week to follow a class (probably less). If you know that you won't have time on the weekends, please consider to take only one class. Joining a class and not doing the papers or the exams will result in the loss of many points for your house!
The Headmaster's Office thanks Zara Black of Slytherin and Vic Abady of Hufflepuff for their great work on this FAQ!
